Lajuma

I would like to share my recent visit to Lajuma Research Centre high up in the Soutpansberg Mountain range. Limpopo Province

This idyllic location offers breathtaking views and attracts nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike.

The highest peak of the Soutpansberg is situated on the reserve. The peak, named Mount Lajuma, rises to an impressive height of 2,100 meters above sea level.
Lajuma has a surface area of 430 hectares. This area is not only stunning but is also a rich habitat for various wildlife species.

Topography is rugged, with deep valleys and high cliffs. The reserve’s unique attributes contribute to its status as a conservation area, drawing researchers and eco-tourists. The reserve is characterized by clear mountain streams and beautiful waterfalls. Vegetation varies from montane grassland to woodland, thicket, and groundwater forest.

These diverse ecosystems provide crucial habitats for many rare and endemic species. Due to its location and diversity of soil and climatic zones, the area contains a remarkable diversity of plants and mammals. There are more than 2500 plant species and 600 tree species present on the Lajuma grounds.

Overall, Lajuma serves as a vital environmental resource that needs to be preserved for future generations.
